Class Descriptions
Anusara Yoga (following your heart, flowing with grace) is a uniquely integrated approach to Hatha Yoga developed by master yogi John Friend. It embraces the art of the human spirit and powerfully blends this with the science of biomechanics. Anusara Yoga is an exceptional yoga system that integrates the celebration of the heart, universal principles of alignment, (energy loops and spirals) and balanced energetic action into the performance of asanas.Yoga 1
This class is designed to introduce students to Anusara’s Universal Principles of Alignment and energy loops and spirals. The emphasis will be on standing poses, while introducing the basic genres of yoga postures, including beginning backbends, hip-openers, and supine poses. Students will leave feeling more confident and grounded in their bodies as they work to systematically stretch and strengthen their hamstrings, hips, backs, and shoulders. This level is appropriate for students without any prior yoga experience, and for students new to Anusara.
Yoga 1.5
This class creates a bridge between Yoga 1 and Yoga 1-2 classes. It begins where level 1 leaves off by exploring the Universal Principles of Alignment in greater detail and introducing a wider range of standing poses, hip openers, backbends, handbalances, and beginning inversions. This level is appropriate for students who have some general yoga experience or students who wish to move beyond Yoga 1, but are not yet ready for Yoga 1-2 classes.
Yoga 1 - 2
This class encompasses a more vigorous sequence of postures, giving students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Alignment Principles through the practice. Focus will be on further exploration of the standing poses and hip openers while also introducing deeper backbends, handbalances, and inversions. This level is appropriate for students who have some general yoga experience or are in good physical condition.
Yoga 2
An exploration of the advanced standing poses, backbends, inversions, hip openers, and twists, this class is designed to incorporate the alignment principles at a deeper level. Students will challenge themselves in a playful and creative environment as they continue refining their practices. This is the most advanced class offered at Gateway! Students must be able to kick up to handstand by themselves at the wall and do a full backbend with straight arms. Please speak with the teacher before signing up.
Yoga Mixed Level
A playful class suitable for students of all levels.
Heart Centered Hooping
Heart-Centered Hooping will focus on using the hula hoop to inspire creative play, heart-opening, and healing, while developing aerobic stamina, strength, balance, and rhythmic awareness. This class is for all levels, suitable for beginning as well as advanced hula hoopers. It will incorporate elements of Dance, Hatha Yoga, QiGong, and Walking Meditation. The 12 week session will explore the foundations of hula hooping movements with a focus on hooping from the Core & expanding out to the Periphery. Students will enjoy the fun, fast-paced, low-impact, aerobic exercise that hula hooping is while engaging & toning all parts of the body, mind, & spirit.
NIA
Nia is a technique that integrates the expressiveness of dance, the precision and power of martial arts and the wisdom of the healing arts. Nia addresses the whole person using a comprehensive, holistic exercise approach. It empowers people to achieve well-being in all facets of life. Dynamic and intriguing rhythms and beats allow students to focus on sensations in the body and become present in the moment. You will learn to listen to the voice of your body and allow the body to guide you into experiencing the joy of movement. Nia is adaptable and safe for any fitness level, from stiff beginners to highly fit athletes. Delivering cardiovascular, whole body conditioning, Nia is based on creating a loving relationship with the body and following The Body's Way - the innate intelligence of the body. It is guided by the "Pleasure Principle": if the body feels good, accepted, and loved, it will naturally become stronger and heal. Nia, meaning "with purpose," in Swahili, provides the opportunity to bring more meaning, more joy, and more health into our lives.
Poi Dance: Graceful Flow
Poi is an ancient art of the Maori tribe of New Zealand that literally means "ball on string". Poi spinning is practiced by everyone in the tribe from young children to grandmothers who use tiny poi to hypnotize infants into sleep. It is a performance art whose primary purposes are story-telling, dance and martial arts training for warriors training to fight with two short swords. Modern poi dance has become a popular movement art that incorporates ancient Maori moves with modern dance and flow arts. It can be done with many kinds of poi, including fire poi, is easy to learn, and accessible to people of all ages and levels. Even wheelchair bound people can spin poi. It is fun, musical, and the moves are limited only by your imagination. It also builds upper body strength, improves balance, increases confidence, and enhances grace.
Acro Play
This class will focus on the fundamentals of acro-yoga, emphasizing alignment and correct body position and will also explore several kinds of skill-based play for developing hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness and creative body expression. Class will begin with a silly, yet invigorating, warm up and a group stretch; followed by the basics of partner balancing. Learn the safe way to move in and out of lift poses, proper alignment, and different techniques for spotting others. Everyone will have the opportunity to be a "base" and a "flyer." Group work is encouraged. 8 week session on Fridays, 6:15 - 7:30 pm.
Prenatal Yoga
Prenatal Yoga will offer expecting mothers the opportunity to reconnect with their innate wisdom, guiding them through a class specifically designed for the journey of pregnancy. Linking yoga postures with the breath will lead practitioners to new discoveries, bringing awareness to the mind, body and spirit, and also to the spirit of their babies. The class, conducted in a calm and peaceful environment, will help strengthen the uterus and pelvic muscles, improve circulation, aid in digestion, exercise the spine, and increase overall comfort. Prenatal Yoga will also provide an opportunity for expecting mothers to develop greater vitality and awareness of their ever-changing bodies, as well as to deepen their relationship with their babies. Gentle postures, breath work, vocal toning and meditation, will help cultivate flexibility, calm, and confidence in preparation for labor and childbirth. Calm and flexibility ease the birthing process, thus reducing pain and increasing the joy of giving birth. 8 week session on Fridays, 11:15-12:30.
**No previous yoga experience necessary.
